Online section in the manual
In the LoveChess manual, there is a long section about solving issues with routers and firewalls. We strongly suggest you to read it if you have problems with building up a connection between players.
Play online (or LAN) step by step
Online play
Step 1
The person that wants to host the game needs to configure the router (if you use one) correctly. Basically you need to forward a port (port 65034) from the router to your computer, more information is in the manual. Quite an extensive list of different router types can be found here ( there are all kind of different games mentioned, but the basics are the same )
Step 2
Find your external IP address here and write it down.
Step 3
The host is done, now the only thing to do for the player that wants to join the game is fill this IP address in the two player dialog.
Step 4
Play the game
LAN
Step 1
Find out your local IP address and write it down. You can find out by navigating to Start > run > type ipconfig in the dialog box. The IP address of the computer is shown.
The player that hosts the game can just select host game and specify the options in the dialog.
Step 2
The player that wants to join the game needs to know the (Local) IP address of the host computer. And types this address in the join game dialog.
Step 3
Join the game, and play.
Internet Connection Sharing
If you are using Internet Connection Sharing, and your machine is not the one that connects to the net, then you can't be the host. Eg. if you are on a local area network (LAN) and you connect to the internet over the LAN via a server , then you can only join - though your server could host an internet game. If you don't know what Internet Connection Sharing is, then you probably don't have it and don't have to worry about it.
