Probably the most remarkable artistic duo the art world has ever embraced, they are humorous, middle-aged and deadly serious. Their art confronts us with our modern way of life, full of contradictions, lust and emptiness. My first encounter with the art of Gilbert & George was at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, a large colorful photographical installation, with one of their famous smiling 'idealized' boys, as always accompanied by the artists themselves. Gilbert & George had their first important exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1969, at that time they were in their 'living sculptures' period. With bronzed heads and hands, they presented themselves as sculptures, singing songs from the old days. In the 1980s they started their large photography projects, showing us the hope, fear and fun of modern society. Somehow, I always tend to sympathize with these guys, even if they show me rather confronting, sometimes even insulting images. The reason for this is simple, they are mirroring our own cultural standards, but they are not only looking at others and criticize them, they do the same with themselves, and each other. related articles:
