Erotic Heads, the art of De Barros |
The French artist Martins de Barros creates erotic 'double images' of human heads build from multiple nudes, or partial nude, bodies. These 'double images' have a long tradition, starting in the Middle Ages. The writer Andre Breton reinvented the concept in his surrealistic manifest in 1924 and even today the idea is used in art, graphical design and tv commercials.
What's on a man's Mind... The last artist that can't be left unmentioned here is the Renaissance painter Arcimboldo, his famous fruit heads, representing the seasons, are often described as the most early surrealistic artworks. Artistically the paintings of Martins de Barros are heavily rooted in the tradition Arcimboldo started, technical perfection with a great eye for detail. Thematically his art could be considered surrealistic, but surrealism in a more lighthearted and humoristic way.
